The bulk of all Amazon advertising budget flows almost entirely into one ad type: Sponsored Products. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display, two formats that run in less contested placements and often at lower click prices, get a fraction of the attention and the budget. That imbalance is exactly the opportunity. Brands that spread budget across all three types build a category presence Sponsored Products alone cannot produce.

Why Sponsored Products alone is not enough

Sponsored Products are the workhorse: they appear directly in the search results and catch buyers with clear purchase intent. But they have limits. They advertise single products, not your brand. They act at the bottom of the funnel, where competition is hardest and click prices are highest. Whoever plays only there fights permanently in the most expensive part of the funnel, and leaves the stages before and after it to the competition.

What Sponsored Brands do

Sponsored Brands are brand ads that usually appear prominently above or within the search results, often with a logo, a custom headline and several products. Their value lies in three things:

  • Brand visibility: you occupy the most valuable space at the very top and register with the buyer before they even see the organic results.
  • Several products at once: you can show a small selection of your range and lead buyers into your brand world or your store.
  • Storytelling: with your own headline and your own images you carry a message, not just a product.

Sponsored Brands are especially strong on category and brand keywords, where presence and recognition are what count.

What Sponsored Display does

Sponsored Display works differently: instead of targeting search terms, it targets audiences and placements, both on and off Amazon. Two uses are particularly effective:

  • Retargeting: you reach buyers again who looked at your product or at similar products and did not buy. These warm contacts often convert above average.
  • Competitor targeting: you place your ad on the detail pages of competing products and catch buyers who are already searching in your category.

Sponsored Display therefore works both at the very top (new audiences) and at the very bottom (winning people back) of the funnel.

How the three types work together

The effect is not in one format but in the interplay. Sponsored Display and Sponsored Brands build awareness and reach, Sponsored Products harvest the intent. A buyer might see a Sponsored Brands ad first, be reached again later through Sponsored Display, and complete the purchase through a Sponsored Products ad. Whoever pays only for the last step gives away the cheaper, earlier contact points.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is measuring both types with the same expectation as Sponsored Products. Brand-building and retargeting campaigns have different goals and often a different ACoS, and judging them on pure efficiency leads to switching off the wrong things. The second mistake is never testing them at all, because the budget "is already needed in Sponsored Products". Precisely because competition there is the most expensive, the cheaper spaces are worth a look.

Getting started in practice

Start small and deliberately: one Sponsored Brands campaign on your most important category keywords and one Sponsored Display retargeting campaign on viewers of your bestsellers. Give both enough time and data before you judge, and assess them in the context of the whole funnel rather than in isolation. Sponsored Brands usually require brand registration.

In short

Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display are not toys but the missing stages of a complete funnel. They work where Sponsored Products cannot reach: brand building, retargeting and catching competitor traffic, often at lower cost. Whoever bets on Sponsored Products alone leaves exactly the spaces the competition has not taken yet.
